The First Bag
“This is how it starts.”
Marco bought his first coin with money he couldn’t afford to lose.
For nine minutes, the chart stayed green. He calculated his retirement twice.
A basketball bounced through the doorway and stopped against Marco’s shoe.
Inside, Kai was arguing that his foot hadn’t touched the line. Nova was repainting a faded court marking. Zee stood beneath the basket, waiting for someone to stop talking and shoot.
Marco picked up the ball.
“You play?” Kai asked.
“A little.”
“Good. We’re short one.”
Marco put his coin safely in his pocket and stepped onto the court.
At Palm Coast, Kai stayed after games to work on Marco’s jumper. At The Block, Lime taught him to hold his ground. Under the lights of Disco House, Nova drew up plays while Zee finished them at the rim.
Marco still rushed shots when he fell behind.
“Pass the ball,” Kai would call. “Share the vibes.”
Slowly, he started seeing the teammate in space before the basket in front of him.
When the Bugs returned, the crew was ready for a rematch.
Lead Marco, Kai and Nova against the Bugs in a quick match, or invite a friend to take the other team. Practise first if you want—the crew will be here.
